This will be the first public performance for the EKU Bluegrass Ensemble. They are very excited to share our music with you... come out and support the newest ensmble for EKU School of Music. This concert is Free and Open to the Public.

Though the Ensemble was primarily formed to perform as part of the Festival of Flowers in Medellin, Columbia, the bigger mission of the EKU Bluegrass Ensemble is to bring together a group of students with an interest in performing Bluegrass, Old Time, Gospel, and Acoustic Country music. Along with a modest education in regards to those genres through history, and experiences, of the instructor.

Pam Perry Combs, Grammy nominated artist, considers herself a “Coach” for those students who are interested in broadening their music experiences. We are excited to showcase this ensemble at the end of the Spring 2017 Semester, and we are so pleased to see such an interest from the students in this new endeavor. All the students involved in this Ensemble are Music Majors: Taylor Wells is a Music Education & Voice Performance Major, and will be singing with the group; Devin Smith is a Music Education Major, and will be featured on fiddle; Tyler Monell is a Music Education major, and will be playing Upright Bass, and will sing bass when needed; Isaac Brooks is a Music Education – Choral Major, and will be playing Mandolin, Guitar, Banjo, and lending his vocal talents; Kevin Case, is a Music Theory/Education, Graduate student, with an emphasis in guitar, and will be playing guitar, and will be featured on vocals; Pam Perry Combs will round out the group on vocals, mandolin, guitar, and banjo, wherever needed.

In the future, I’d like to see the School of Music work on a broader effort, says Pam Perry Combs. Many of our professors who teach Music Appreciation, do touch on the History of Bluegrass, Old Time, and County music, and present a good spectrum of styles within those genres. But there is so much to be learned about the techniques of Bluegrass music in general, and a ton of History within each one of those genres mentioned above; not to mention the knowledge to be found right here in Kentucky with the rich heritage, steeped in traditions born within walking distance of the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Kentucky is considered the Bluegrass State, and what better place to learn about it than Eastern Kentucky University.

The Ensemble will perform as part of the Festival of Flowers in the city of Medellin, Columbia. A week-long festival including the world parade of silleteros. During the month of August, La Feria de Los Flores (The Flower Festival) attracts people from all the world including the USA, Australia and Europe just to witness the special attractions that include a trail ride through town on horses, orchid competition, music festivals and parade of silleteros. Steeped in rich tradition and botanical excellence, the city of Medellin truly comes alive as it displays its proud heritage in the brilliant colors of its flowers that grow in and around the countryside. Also included in the week-long schedule of events at the Feria de Las Flores is a fireworks show to begin and end the festival, dog and mascots walk, National Trova Festival, Classic & Antique car parade, Sanalejo Market, Orchids/Flowers & Birds Expo, National Equestrian Fair, Humor City, orchestra festival, horse ride through town (cabalgata), caravan of chivas, popular/folk music concerts, activities for children, various displays and more. The Feria de Las Flores is packed with options for the visiting tourist and international travelers.
