Without a doubt the SFGQ’s performance was an outstanding highlight of our festival. Their impeccable technique, warm sound, and stage presence spilled over to the audience and set the tone for the rest of the festival.
— Reed Gilchrist, Director of La Guitarra California Festival
Since its debut in 1997, the San Francisco Guitar Quartet has established itself as a dynamic force in the guitar world through its innovative concerts and recordings. The current generation of the group seeks to continue the mission of expanding the guitar quartet repertoire through collaboration with living composers, bringing creative new works to life.
The SFGQ’s recordings have garnered praise from critics and fans alike. Classical Guitar Magazine called their album Compadres "…a nice release from a very capable group of players who give strong performances throughout in this particularly interesting program." Acoustic Guitar Magazine chose the album as one of their "Top CD’s of the Year." Minor 7th Review said of their album Silhouette, “The SFGQ performs the various works beautifully, making full use of their broad dynamic range and remarkable accuracy” and composer Phillip Houghton called the group’s recording of his piece Opals “wonderfully played…and beautiful!"
The SFGQ has toured across the United States and travelled internationally to Germany, Taiwan, and Guam, where they performed sold out concerts. Past performances include San Francisco’s Omni Series, La Guitarra California Festival, Pasadena’s Guitarra del Mar series, the Hot Air Music Festival, and Dresdner Gitarrenfest in Dresden, Germany. The group has also performed at universities throughout the United States and has appeared on both NPR and the syndicated radio shows West Coast Live and Classical Guitar Alive!
