Percussion Studio Returns from Trinadad
Dr. Jason Koontz, Director of Percussion Studies at EKU, has returned from an 11-day educational program in Trinidad with five students: Joshua Anglin, Cody Lyles, Preston Ratliff, William Stephenson, Katelynn Ward. He left with five students, so the trip was overall a great success.
Koontz has been working with the Birdsong Music Academy in Tunapuna, Trinidad to establish the "Panorama Educational Program," an eleven day study of Calypso, Soca and steel band music culminating in a performance during the semi-final round of the national steel band competition called "Panorama." The aforementioned EKU students rehearsed with the Birdsong Orchestra every evening for a total of 27 hours, received 8 hours of masterclass and lecture-demonstration instruction on the following topics: Steel Band history, an analysis of the composition Dis 1. 4. Raf (Birdsong's competition piece), Calypso with Lord Relator, and Improvisation & Musicianship. Additionally, the students had an opportunity to visit some cultural landmarks, and visit various panyards in Port of Spain.
The 100 member Birdsong Orchestra performed on Sunday Jan. 25th at 1am after drawing for the last position in performance order, and tied for 15th in the competition.
