Directed by EKU faculty member Matthew Lewis Johnson and featuring a cast and full orchestra of EKU students, the production promises to be a wacky whirlwind of whimsy. “We are so happy to be able to share this family friendly show with Richmond. Mary Rogers wrote this revisionist fairy tale long before Shrek stepped out of the swamp and we are really leaning into the comedy of the story. It’s not just silly though, the characters have real stakes and it was a treat to see how engaged the ladies are in the story. This isn’t a kingdom where damsels need to be saved. The damsels are the ones changing the world,” says Johnson. The music director for the production is Jessica Green of Distilled Theatre, the show is choreographed by Jenny Fitzpatrick of Blackbird Dance Theatre, the costumes are designed by Jonathan Hibbard of the Appalachian Shakespeare Center, and the properties and puppets are designed by Paige Adams of AthensWest theatre. “With some of the best professional talent in the area behind the scenes these EKU students are getting a rare opportunity,” says Johnson.
The show will be presented on the Gifford stage in the Campbell building. The school of music plans to produce two shows a year. Each fall production will be a big family friendly extravaganza followed by something smaller and edgier in the Spring semester. This year the spring musical will be the 90’s camp classic Batboy.
