EKU Bluegrass Ensemble Travels to Colombia
The EKU Bluegrass Ensemble just returned from a trip to Colombia, South America, where they performed for the Colombo Americano organization traveling throughout Medellin, Armenia, Cali, and Buga, as part of a cultural exchange program. ColomboAmericano and the Eastern Kentucky University worked together to make sure that the Bluegrass Ensemble was able to make this trip happen. The Ensemble was greeted with enthusiastic crowds everywhere they went! Many of the Colombian people had never heard Bluegrass music but truly enjoyed the organic feel that the Ensemble gave throughout their performances.
The Ensemble also had the chance to participate in workshops, at several music, and performing arts schools. There were students ranging from grade three to eleven (graduation age in Colombia). The group shared information, and techniques on each instrument, along with discussion of the definition of Bluegrass music, and its origins. That coupled with a lively performance, the smiles on the kids faces were priceless!
Many of the students of Colombia were anxious to try out any english they had learned. And were delighted to find out that a couple of our students spoke some spanish. The one comment from the ensemble that could be heard over and over, was that they loved being able to share a teaching experience with the students of Colombia.
For some of our students, this was their first trip out of the U.S., and I'd say that it's an experience they will never forget. The hearts of the people of Colombia are deep rooted in tradition, and pride for their culture. And we are thankful that they were eager to share all of that with with our students.
