Adria Sutherland was appointed Visiting Professor of Clarinet at Eastern Kentucky University in 2018.   Dr. Sutherland received her Doctorate of Musical Arts degree at the University of Kentucky (2018), her Master of Music degree at East Carolina University (2001), and her Bachelor of Music degree at Morehead State University (1999).  She additionally holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education.  Her teachers have included Dr. Scott Wright, Dr. Nathan Williams, Michael Acord, and Atossa Kramer.   

Dr. Sutherland began her professional performance career at the age of 18, when she earned her position with the Lexington Philharmonic as clarinet substitute.  Since then, she has performed with the National Wind Ensemble in Carnegie Hall (Principal/Soloist), the Camerata New York Orchestra (NYC), the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra-NYC (a 12-piece ensemble accompanying silent films), the North Carolina Chamber Orchestra, and various other orchestral ensembles.  Dr. Sutherland is an avid chamber musician, and she is a founding member of the woodwind trio, Favonian Winds.  Her experiences have allowed her to perform throughout the continental United States and throughout Italy, Greece, Austria, and Germany.  She is additionally passionate about community music, and she has performed with the Central Kentucky Concert Band, the Madison Community Band, and the Advocate Brass Band. 

Dr. Sutherland has been teaching clarinet privately to all ages and coaching sectionals for top tier schools since 1997.  Her students have a proven record of success, having won positions at the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Brevard Music Center Summer Festival, the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts, and in All-State Bands and Intercollegiate Bands, many earning principal positions.   Schools for whom she has coached the clarinets have performed at the MidWest Clinic, the Texas Music Educators Association state conference, and the Kentucky Music Educators In-Service Conference.  She has been a guest artist at the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts since 2015.  Prior to her appointment at Eastern Kentucky University, she served on the faculties of Berea College, the University of Kentucky, Georgetown College, Transylvania University, Morehead State University, and Asbury College, where she has taught applied clarinet, music theory, music history, music education courses, and has coached chamber music ensembles.   

Dr. Sutherland currently resides in Berea, KY with her husband and her two beautiful girls.
